The acts coming out of Canada are basically blowing us away and we are a-ok with it. Our newest obsession? Canadian alt-rockers Bleeker. Though they aren’t new to the scene (they’ve been a band for about 13 years), they’re new to our ears. Their latest release, Bleeker, is a killer EP that grabs influences from alternative, rock and pop, and has you jamming out within the first few notes. Get to know the band below!
How did Bleeker form and come to be what it is today?
We met at a local blues Jam in 2003 in our hometown or Orillia. We started playing together every night after school and in 9 weeks we had written and recorded our first album! It was called Undertow. We would write about the convenience store down the street, or getting in trouble. From there we kept writing new songs and it landed us here! 5 albums, a record deal, and some facial hair later.
Who are some of your musical influences – both as a band and individually?
We are all very similar. All the classic rock of course. Zeppelin, Sabbath, Hendrix, Skynyrd, Rush (Mike). Then we moved on to Audioslave, U2, Chilli Peppers. Now its everything and anything. Its hard not to be. There are so many different artists and different types of music, and you cant help but pull from them. We listen to everything, and we will write anything. A good song is a good song. Once you put limits on your music, is when its starts to become boring… and eerily job like.
What do you enjoy most about playing shows?
The 30 seconds right after you walk off stage and the faces on the other guys after you know everyone nailed it. When it all comes together for a set where your onstage and didn’t have a single thought in your head. Just played music naturally. It doesn’t happen every show, but when it does I remember why I love playing music so much.
What do you do when you’re not playing music?
We have recently built our own studio from the ground up, so we spend a lot of time there. Being in a band over 13 years, we’ve all had so many odd jobs we could probably build a house! We hang out drinking tall boys of Busch in the sun. Mike brings over a massive amount of food and cooks for us and all our friends. And then we record more music.
