5 Questions With: To Write Love On Her Arms [Warped Edition]

image

We caught up with the lovely folks at To Write Love On Her Arms to discuss the release of the To Write Love On Her Arms movie, National Suicide Prevention Week and the 10th birthday of the foundation! Check out our interview below!

Between the release of the movie, If You Feel Too Much and your continued college and music event participation, this has been a giant year for TWLOHA, what were some of the highlights for you personally?
In the Events world, this was an incredibly busy year; we returned to Australia to do a festival series, we had Heavy and Light in Los Angeles and Orlando, and we hosted our Run for It 5k in Melbourne, FL, and we also finished a very busy festival/Warped Tour circuit this summer. Any opportunity to connect with new people and reconnect with supporters is always a highlight and something that we are very thankful for.

You guys have been on Warped Tour for several years, what brings you back to this community in particular?
We love Warped because it offers a great opportunity to connect, engage and activate over half a million attendees each summer as well as some of the best up and coming musicians. The crowd is passionate about social issues and they want to make a difference. Kevin Lyman and the entire VWT team has become family and we love that the festival features a “Take Action” Not for profit section with 10-15 non-profits that are all working for incredible causes. It is a chance to raise support for TWLOHA, but most importantly, it is a chance for us to show those that are struggling that they are not alone. We provide resource guides for each city to help get people plugged into help when they need it. Warped definitely feels like home for TWLOHA.

National Suicide Prevention Week saw the rise of the wonderful No One Else Can Play Your Part campaign, what do you advise people to do to raise awareness on a smaller scale?
Educating themselves on the mental health so that we can all work to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health would be the best thing that people can do. It will help them understand the issues and better address it when someone is struggling in their local community.

A lot of people know of TWLOHA and the amazing stories that have been shared, but are unsure of next steps. What do you recommend looking into for people who are uncertain about receiving help?
I would encourage them to be brave and reach out. We strongly believe in the power of community and the power that it can have and help with healing. I would encourage them to visit the find help section of our website. https://twloha.com/find-help/local-resources/

You all have accomplished so much recently, what is next for TWLOHA?
This year marks the 10th birthday of TWLOHA, so keep an eye on our website for what is to come!  https://twloha.com/events/

To Write Love On Her Arms Announces 4th AnnualNational Suicide Prevention Week Campaign

National Suicide Prevention Week (September 7 – September 13) and World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10) are right around the corner and non-profit organization, To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA), has announced their fourth annual campaign. This year’s campaign is inspired by the words that founder Jamie Tworkowski used to close out last year’s “No One Else Can Play Your Part” campaign. Read the excerpt below:

“Above all else, we choose to stay. We choose to fight the darkness and the sadness, to fight the questions and the lies and the myth of all that’s missing. We choose to stay, because we are stories still going. Because there is still some time for things to turn around, time for surprises and for change. We stay because no one else can play our part. Life is worth living. We’ll see you tomorrow.”

These words are not only powerful, but extremely meaningful to TWLOHA. “Hope always involves tomorrow. It’s choosing to believe that things can change, that tomorrow can look different than today.” The campaign will run from now until September 13th and TWLOHA is looking to raise $75,000 via Classy, all of which will go to treatment and recovery. Find out other ways you can help below!

1) Buy The World Suicide Prevention Day pack.
Each pack includes a shirt, a bracelet, 3 poster prints, a response card, and 15 info cards. All of these items are meant to equip you to talk about suicide prevention in your community. Use them as conversation starters, encouraging reminders, and informative tools to share with others.

2) Join the conversation on social media.

Join the conversation and post photos using #Tomorrow15 & #WSPD15. There will also be specific ways to participate during National Suicide Prevention Week (#NSPW15), and we will share those with you as it gets closer.

3) Fundraise for suicide prevention.
From now until the end of NSPW, every dollar raised through our NSPW 2015 StayClassy page will go directly to funding treatment and recovery. The top individual fundraiser will win one of the following prizes: 2 VIP tickets for you and a friend to Vans Warped Tour in the city closest to you. Travel expenses covered plus $200 worth of TWLOHA merch or 2 VIP tickets for you and a friend to HEAVY AND LIGHT in Orlando, FL, complete with round-trip airfare and hotel stay or 1 custom poem from Sierra DeMulder

Interview With:: To Write Love On Her Arms

To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) is currently out on the road presenting the Hope Revolution Tour featuring Hawthorne Heights and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Last weekend our photographer, Caitlyn Willard, had the chance to cover one of the stops on the tour and chat with Chad Moses of TWLOHA about the organization, it’s message, and how they’re enjoying the tour! You can read Caitlyn’s interview below!

First off, thanks so much for taking the time to talk with us. Can you please tell us a little bit about TWLOHA and your involvement with them?
My name is Chad Moses, I work in music and events for TWLOHA and we are a non-profit organization that exists to provide hope and find help for those struggling with depression, addiction, self injury and suicide. Beyond that we exist to encourage, to inspire, to inform, and also to invest financially into avenues toward treatment and recovery.

This past week was National Suicide Prevention Week and you guys were focusing on the message of “No one else can play your part.” Why do you think this is such a powerful message?
I think at its core, “No one else can play your part”, it holds something that is very true and it might be something that we don’t think about as often as we should. The idea that your life is something of ultimate value, that your life is worth it. So, in anything that we do, the hope is to connect more people to more people. If you conceptualize that as a story, if your life is a song then just acknowledging the parts of your life that deserve to be shared. Personally I feel that every part of your life deserves to be shared, that an audience to your story gives context to that story. That things that you’re walking through can positively impact other people. That you’re not too damaged, that you’re not too broken, that you are worth the time it takes to get to know you.

A lot of the initial promotion for TWLOHA was through bands. Now you guys are basically veterans of festivals like Warped and hosting tours like Heavy and Light, and now presenting The Hope Revolution tour. What do you guys try to do differently to introduce people to TWOLHA for those who may not be familiar with you? How do you try to engage people?
My friend Jason and I, we make up the music and events department of TWLOHA and it’s been a really awesome journey over the past six years that I’ve worked with the organization. We kinda get to write our own rules, there’s not a lot of people that have a job like ours and because of that we like to work in ways that are most fulfilling and kind of the simplest which is through friendship. You’re meeting us on The Hope Revolution Tour and this really on the most simple level is a reunion of friends. Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Hawthorne Heights play a huge part in our story as we’ve been growing over the past eight and a half years. When it came to the table that we had an opportunity to work with these guys it was a no brainer. We love working with our friends. So when we work with music there’s no real sense of a business plan, it’s more than dollars and cents, it’s about meeting people where they feel most valued and feel most alive. If you take a moment to think about your favorite artist, your favorite song, your favorite album, it’s probably your favorite because it reminds you of some things that are true in your own life. So we hope to ride on that sense of honesty that music encourages, we hope that what you experience here tonight will be a sort of role model in how you can live your life in the presence of other people celebrating, singing, dancing, crying, all these things, but at it’s core it’s about sharing.

You’ve been on this tour for over a week now. What has been your favorite stop so far?
We’ve been everywhere from Chicago, to Syracuse, to Detroit, and we were in Philly last night. Every stop has kinda brought its own flare and it’s really fun to see different communities really bring a lot of city and regional pride to these events. Last night in Philly, there was something different about that night. It was a smaller room, it was a long and skinny room and it was so much fun. Everyone that was there came with the intention of having one of the best nights of their lives. I remember, to close the entire night, Hawthorne Heights was playing one of their songs “Ohio is for Lovers” and for the first half of the song they didn’t sing at all, they just played their instruments and the rest of the crowd sang with them. There’s something really special about that and seeing the energy that my friends in Red Jumpsuit Apparatus had, there was just something different about that night. A lot of fun times, but we have a week left so we’re looking forward to a lot more memories being made.

TWLOHA has one of the largest followings on social media over any other non-profit on Facebook. Why do you think Facebook, and social media in general, is such an important way to reach an audience?
For us it’s less like the most important way to meet people, but it’s just what we know. This entire thing started on Myspace just trying to share the story of our friend Rene and her first steps toward recovery and sobriety and the story called TWLOHA found its home on Myspace. As social media as grown we’ve been able to see the best the internet has to offer. You don’t have to look too far to see the darker parts of the internet come to the surface. You see and hear on the news, stories about cyber bullying or trolls or people being hacked and it’s heartbreaking, but at the same time we hope that we can provide a different voice to that realm. The idea of being interconnected with people and rekindling friendships that started in elementary school and now you’re able to reconnect after a couple decades and that’s something beautiful. Like I mentioned earlier I think TWLOHA mission is really entrenched in the idea of people being connected to more people. Facebook is a huge piece of that. Beyond that Facebook exists as a way to share what’s going on in your life, not just to send it virally and without care who sees it, but share it with people who you feel are closest to you, people you are intentionally connected to and that’s a beautiful thing.

Ultimately, what message do you want people to walk away with?
I think in any event, wether it’s Warped Tour, a club show, a speaking event or seeing us online, we hope that you know that it’s okay to not be okay. Just don’t think that you have to do this alone. The hope is that you’d be inspired to share your life, that you don’t have to be afraid of the dark part. One of my favorite things that I heard my buddy Jamie say, he started this project, is he’s hanging out with his buddy Nathan and at one point his friend Nathan said “look I’m not afraid of your pain” and I think that at TWLOHA we want to let people know that you aren’t that different from us, that we know these issues. We see people that are affected by this daily and these words have names and they have faces. I think at the heart of it there’s far more that will connect us than will ever separate us. So you don’t have to be afraid of those darker parts of your story, but in fact those are place that give immense potential for growth. So the hope is to inspire you to reach out, to ask for help and find connection in your community.

Where can we expect to see TWLOHA next?
So today we’re in Washington DC which means tomorrow is an off day and then off to Pittsburgh. That’s the most specific example I can give you on that. We’re on The Hope Revolution Tour and we have ten days left. We’re looking forward to seeing you guys there, you can see where the tour’s going to be routed on our website. You can also see where our speaking events are going to be held over the next few months as well as any other music opportunities to hang out with us. We’ll be showing up in Las Vegas for Life Is Beautiful Festival in October and we’re really excited about that. We love the heart of the festival and the people that are running it so we’re excited to be back for a second year there. The hope is always bigger and better. So keep an eye on the website, we’re hoping to close out 2014 in a positive way and make room for a really active 2015.

Thank you so much for your time. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you for taking the time to interview, if you’re reading this we hope that you know that we hear you too, that we see you too, that you’re not alone. If you or somebody that you love is struggling, that hope is real and we have highlighted some avenues for help on our website as well. Feel free to check us out at TWLOHA.com. We want you to know that your life is worth it, that your life if worth an audience, that your story is still going on and that no one else can play your part. We’re thankful for your time and for listening to us and just know that you have people in your life and we’d love to help clarify those paths of people that would love to be there for you.

50 Acts You Won’t Want To Miss At SXSW (Part 1)

image
Since none of us here at Lucy Out Loud will be able to attend SXSW this year, we’ve put together a list of 50 acts(in no particular order) we think those of you that are attending shouldn’t miss!

To check out our first installment (acts 1-10), click “Read More”!

*Note: some acts we’ve included are performing at South By So What?! and not South By South West. However, since the festival takes place during the week of South By Southwest, we’ve decided to still include them in our list!

Part 1 (Acts 1-10)

  1. iTCH
Hip-hop seems to reach further now than it ever has. With this, and the ability to combine punk, pop, and electronic elements into his music, iTCH has been able to create a unique sound with a bit of English charm, adding his name to a short list of artists who have successfully been able to do so.
    Where to catch iTCH: 3.13 – 9:30pm – SONY Showcase @ Hangar Lounge; 3.14 – 2:20pm – Big Picture Media Showcase @ Blind Pig Rooftop; 3.14 – 7:20pm – Audiotree Showcase @ Licha’s Cantina
  2. The Front Bottoms
Thanks to Brian Sella’s unique voice (which shares a likeness to that of Say Anything’s Max Bemis or Andrew Jackson Jihad’s Sean Bonnette) and the duo’s clever lyrics, The Front Bottoms have built a huge following for themselves, proving that just because their music may not sound the prettiest, that doesn’t mean it isn’t pretty.
    Where to catch The Front Bottoms: 3.12 – 1:30pm – Run For Cover Records/Brixton Agency Showcase @ The Liberty; 3.12 – 6pm – The Chris Gethard Showcase @ Esther’s Follies; 3.12 – 11pm – BrooklynVegan Showcase @ Red 7 Patio; 3.14 – 8pm – APA Official Showcase @ The Palm Door; 3.14 – 1am – Bar None Showcase @ Valhalla
  3. Dangerkids
Dangerkids are one of the few bands who have been able to successfully merge the worlds of electronic hardcore and rap/rock. Their debut album near the tail-end of 2013 was well-received and ambitious, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see them have a big year this year.
Where to catch Dangerkids: 3.16 – South By So What?! @ Quiktrip Park
  4. The Trash Pop Icons
Fronted by sisters Nadia and Naomi Zep, the group has made a name for themselves throughout the San Francisco Bay area. The group’s debut album, A Way With Words, has a sound for any type of listener and an energy that is sure to translate to the stage.
    Where to catch The Trash Pop Icons: 3.12 – 12pm – Big Picture Media Showcase @ Thirsty Nickel; 3.12 – 4pm – Texas Rockfest @ Shiner’s Saloon, 3.13 – 7pm – Texas Rockfest @ Blue Moon; 3.14 – 7pm – Lot323’s Shocase @ the corner of Colorado & 4th
  5. Tiny Moving Parts
If mewithoutYou and La Dispute conceived a child at a pop/punk show, the result would be Minnesota’s Tiny Moving Parts. Sharp, quick, and harsh, their music is personal and begs to be shouted.
Where to catch Tiny Moving Parts: 3.14 – Between 12pm and 6pm – Charlie Says “Fest!” @ 2326 E Cesar Chavez St.
  6. letlive.
We’ve heard a lot about letlive. over the last few years or so. And there’s a justified reason for why they’ve had the huge years that they’ve had. When the LA five-piece performs, they leave every ounce of them on their stage and with the fans. Whether you know this band or not, they’re one you’ll be disappointed for missing.
Where to catch letlive.: 3.15 – South By So What?! @ Quiktrip Park
  7. From Indian Lakes
Following a year that included their first headline tour, as well as an opening spot for The Main and Anberlin and recognition as one of Alternative Press’ 100 Bands You Need to Know in 2014, California’s From Indian Lakes are poised to have a great follow-up year.
Where to catch From Indian Lakes: 3.11 – 7pm – To Write Love on Her Arms Texas UChapter @ Catalyst Teen Center; 3.13 – 12:05 – Equal Vision Records and Pure Noise Records Showcase @ G-Pen Annex; 3.13 – Between 12pm to 1am – The Audiotree Showcase @ Licha’s Cantina

  8. Ashley Allen
Ashley Allen has all of the makings to be a standout pop star – hooks, looks, and plenty of personality. Her music is undeniably catchy and mainstream-ready, making her an artist to surely watch.
    Where to catch Ashley Allen: 3.14 – 12pm – High School Nation Tour @ 1121 E. 7th St

  9. Lucius
I(Eric) first saw Lucius perform at Boston Calling in September. They were one of the lower-billed openers, but they had everyone talking. Donned in identical black-and-white dresses, their staging was, and still is, as intriguing, charming, and distinctive as their music.
    Where to catch Lucius: 3.12 – 8am – KUTX @ The Four Seasons; 3.12 – 5pm – The Paste Party @ Swan Dive; 3.12 – 10:45 – High Road Touring @ Cedar Street Courtyard; 3.13 – 6pm – Heartbreaker Banquet @ Willie Nelson’s “Luck, TX” Ranch; 3.13 – 12am – The Heart of Austin @ The Market; 3.14 – 6am – KGSR @ The W Hotel; 3.14 – 12pm – SXSW Radio Showcase @ The Convention Center; 3.14 – 4pm – The Tumblr House @ Clive Bar

  10. Chiodos
Chiodos are one of the most tirelessly-working groups out there. After a couple of years that saw a revolving door or lineup changes, 2013 was a return to form. Now, with an extensive tour schedule and a new album on its way, they’re set to retake their territory in 2014.
Where to catch Chiodos: 3.14 – South By So What?! @ Quiktrip Park
