Boston pop-rockers, Magic Man, will be heading out on a co-headlining tour this spring with Sydney natives, The Griswolds. The Hotline Spring Tour features support from Panama Wedding and will kick off on April 8th in Carrboro, NC and will wrap on May 18th in Atlanta, GA!

Pinelands Music Festival Artists Announced

Last month, information regarding Pinelands Music Festival’s first day-long event was released and it’s easy to say this is going to be one hell of a good time! The festival will showcase 30 bands and take place across three stages, one of which will spotlight local/regional acts.

The line-up so far includes Magic Man, Liam & Me, Stellar Young, Man On A Mountain, Plantation, The Early November, Jukebox The Ghost, Hellogoodbye, Good Old War, X Ambassadors, You Blew It!, You Me & Everyone We Know, A Great Big Pile of Leaves, Northern Faces, Young Statues, Raccoon Fighter, Where The Ocean Meets The Sky, Palmas, Sleepyface, Cheezy & The Crackers, Mo Lowda & The Humble, The Color & Sound, and The Press War.

Today we talk about our #1 pick – The Decemberists!

The Boston Calling folks kept things interesting this year for their lineup announcement. First, the reveal came after a city-wide scavenger hunt for vinyl albums with the bands listed on them. After this, there was the mention that there was still one more band to come. When the BC staff swiftly denied any rumors that Outkast would be performing (sorry, Miss Jackson …), the flood of guesses and rumors began. And when the last slot on the lineup was uncovered, it took many by surprise to see The Decemberists on the list.

Not only is Boston Calling the band’s only festival slot in 2014, it will also be their first performance together since August 2011. Later that week (on the 30^th), the band will be performing at a benefit in Portland, Oregon, playing their debut Castaways and Cutouts in its entirety.

Reunions are always meaningful experiences to witness. This time last year, almost exactly to the day, Fall Out Boy played the Boston date of their reunion tour. And if the massive line wrapped around the House of Blues hinted at anything, it’s this – a three-year gap is a long time for a band to be absent, and their first return to the stage is bound to be special. Whether you’re a fan or not, it’s going to be a sight to see and an experience to remember.

Today we talk about our #2 pick – Brand New!

One of the most beloved, discussed, and enigmatic acts around, Brand New have been leading the pack for nearly a decade and a half. As a group that has earned a following that borders on crazed (just ask anyone who tried getting tickets to their shows back in December or those who are already awaiting a Deja Entendu vinyl preorder), their set this weekend has potential to be massive. Could there be mention of that ever-elusive fifth album that has always been “in the works?” Will it be another full-album setlist (and if so, what if it’s Daisy from start to finish? Will the ungrateful fans flood the message boards again?)

There are a lot of questions that won’t get answered until the band takes the stage, but we can be certain of this – the fact that Brand New are playing Boston Calling is a pretty big deal. There have been fans, myself included, who have waited a while for this band to start consistently doing things again, and this weekend marks the start of a pretty substantial touring schedule that runs through the end of summer. This last winter, scalpers were selling tickets for upwards of $250 (I know, I know – that’s disgusting) for the band’s club shows. That being said, having Brand New sharing a stage with a handful of other amazing artists this weekend is just icing on the cake.

Today we talk about our #3 pick – Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls!

Few do what they do as well as Frank Turner (and not having him as the #1 artist says something pretty special about the next two groups. But, we’ll get there when we get there). Backed by his band The Sleeping Souls, the group boasts an impressive balance between solo acoustic material and full-band punk anthems, making the live show an experience to be had.When he released 2013’s Tape Deck Heart (which was second to only Sara Bareilles’ The Blessed Unrest for my Album of the Year), he continued with his tradition of being one of the most honest artists around.

With English charm and endurance to match, Turner, who is always on an endless cycle of writing, recording, and touring, always brings a full performance. His current schedule has him booked internationally through the middle of September, including a last-minute addition on Sunday the 25^th in Cambridge for the fans who couldn’t make it to Boston Calling, as well as taking his folk-punk brilliance out on to open water, tagging along with Flogging Molly and Gogol Bordello on the Salty Dog Cruise.

So, if you’re interested in seeing one of the best live acts around, or if you tend to get a little seasick, be sure to be planted in the crowd and don’t miss a note. Also, bring your dancing shoes, because it’s such an energetic set and you won’t be standing still (mostly because Turner makes his audience do jumping jacks during the chorus to “Recovery,” because he’s that cool.)

Today we talk about our #4 pick – Tegan & Sara!

When they released their seventh studio album, Heartthrob, at the end of January, Canadian duo Tegan & Sara started 2013 off with what was inarguably one of the best records of the year, as well as a giant, broadening stride in their career.

This fall, the twins will spend their time on the road in support of Katy Perry. But before hitting the road on the Prismatic Tour, they’ll be making their rounds on the festival circuit, with performances at the Hangout Music Festival, Summerfest, Firefly, and CBC, with a handful of headlining dates scattered throughout.

Regardless of which side of the Quin sisters we see at Boston Calling – whether it’s the electronically-infused synth-pop that Heartthrob brought or the gloomy acoustic anthems the two are known for (though I expect the setlist to be a fair balance between them), there’s sure to be a full crowd singing every word.

Though I’ve never considered myself to be a huge fan of his, Jack Johnson is an artist that always seems to draw a bit of my attention. As someone who seems to be genuinely in love with the music he produces, his work ethic and his pride are commendable. Now, as the first artist to ever headline the newly-added Friday night show at Boston Calling, his massive following is sure to be out in full force.

Today, we talk about our #6 pick – Bastille!

Taking a detour away from their The Good, The Bad Blood, and the Ugly Tour, which has been fully sold-out since the presales were posted, London’s Bastille will be making their second of three trips to Boston this year. With much thanks to be paid to the enormous reception of single “Pompeii,” the band has been nearly inescapable for months. However, the success of the single shouldn’t eclipse the rest of the brilliant Bad Blood, nor will their live show lose any energy outside the confines of the three and a half minutes of their breakout hit.

Back in September, Sonicbids’ Emerging Artists competition yielded two fantastic results for the festival. On Saturday, Boston’s Viva Viva started off the day, while Royal Teeth came up from Louisiana to kick off Sunday’s festivities and have been on a roll since then, earning spots at this year’s Bonnaroo and Firefly festivals, as well as providing the soundtrack to a Samsung Galaxy commercial.

This year, there was only one winner selected; Toronto’s The Box Tiger, a perfect fit for the indie-pop lineup of this year. Spotlighted by Sonia Sturino’s soft, yet sharp vocals, they’ll be sure to start Sunday off with some serious buzz, and when Tegan & Sara take the stage later, don’t be surprised to hear some flattering comparisons tossed around.

But, before The Box Tiger can kickstart Sunday’s show, the stage on Saturday morning will belong to one of Boston’s best kept secrets – Magic Man. Their brand of energetic synth-pop earned them a spot as Panic! at the Disco’s support later this year, so be sure to show up early on Saturday and get a glimpse at a band you’ll be sure to hear about.

Show Review:: Walk The Moon 9/20

Walk the Moon returned to Boston, MA for the first time in two years on Friday, September 20^th. Fans stood in line at the House of Blues with their faces painted, waiting for the doors to open. Painted faces is now a trademark of the band since the release of their video “Anna Sun”.

The show started off with a bang as Magic Man, a synth rock band from Boston, opened the show. They performed songs from their recently released EP titled, You Are Here. “Texas,” “Every Day,” and “Paris” were a few of the fun and upbeat songs they performed. Alex, the lead singer, was energetic as he jumped and danced on stage during the entire set. The band expressed how happy they were to be home, even though it was just for the night. Magic Man were the perfect band to open for Walk the Moon because they had a similar sound to them along with a lively performance.

Once Walk the Moon came on stage, there was a different feeling in the room. Fans moved closer to the stage, eager for their set to begin. Everyone was united as they sang “Quesadilla” at the top of their lungs. With a fifteen song set list, Walk the Moon did not neglect any songs off their self-titled album. Playing favorites like “Shiver Shiver,” “Tightrope,” and “Anna Sun,” the crowd was mesmerized by how talented the band was. Their catchy choruses and fun sounds from Nicholas’ synthesizer kept the crowd wanting more from the band. Fans were more than happy to hear new material from the band as they performed two brand new songs!

Emotions ran wild while the band performed one of their more popular songs, “Fixin.” After the song ended, Nicholas Petricca (lead singer), was so full of joy he started crying. Nicholas explained that the song was about his father who suffers from Alzheimer’s. Hearing everyone sing along to the song that Nicholas wrote for his father was too much for him to handle. Eli Maiman, the guitarist, had to give him a hug to calm him down. It was a bittersweet moment, but Nicholas did not let his crying ruin the mood of the show.

Before playing “I Can Lift a Car,” Nicholas told the crowd that they should forget their troubles and enjoy everything that was happening in that moment. He wanted everyone to forget anything that stressed them out like school and work. The crowd was captivated by his passionate performance during that song. “I Can Lift a Car” was the best song played that night because it helped everyone throw away their problems and only focus on what was happening at that point in time.

Walk the Moon played “Jenny” for their encore. By that time, the crowd had let loose and let the music consume them. At one point, Nicholas stood on the edge of the stage and fans pushed as hard as they could to get closer to him. The band left fans with the memory of a fantastic concert that would not be forgotten.
