Interview With:: Spencer Sutherland

Most people would be familiar with you through your YouTube videos, but it’s almost as if you’ve appeared out of the blue. How did you first get into making music and performing for people?

Thanks so much for having me! Ever since I can remember, I’ve always like HAD to be singing. No matter what I would be doing, I would be singing! In high school, I didn’t want a regular job, so I literally called hundreds of restaurants around my hometown to see if I could sing there. I played at countless Mexican, greek, Italian and carryout restaurants, and sometimes didn’t get paid! It didn’t matter though, just as long as I was in front of people! I got an opportunity after I graduated high school, to audition for a woman who is now my manager, and 5 days later she let me open for Big Time Rush in front of 20,000 people! Ever since then, it’s been a ride!

Speaking of your YouTube videos, you’ve done an amazing job at covering songs from artists of various genres and really making the song your own. One thing I’ve noticed is that most of your covers are acoustic – not that it’s a bad thing! I think it actually showcases your vocals a lot better because it’s a little more raw, but is there a reason you prefer doing acoustic covers?

Thank you so much! I really like acoustic music for covers because I like to showcase my vocals and what I did to the song!  If it’s more stripped down, the listener can hear my own twist that I put on it!

For your 21st birthday you did a StageIt.com performance and donated all of the ticket proceeds to the Make A Wish Foundation. What made you decide to celebrate your birthday by helping out a charity and do you think this is something you will do again in the future?

Absolutely! Doing work with charities is one of my favorite things to do! As I get older, I realize that the things I want become something that can’t be bought. Helping people will always be very important to me.

You released a music video with actress/singer, Stefanie Scott. I have to say, I think that Taylor Swift cover might be one of my favorites…and it might beat the original, in my opinion. But since it’s release the video has reached nearly 94,000 views. Do you think you’ll be doing any other cover duet’s?

Thanks! Working with Stefanie was so great! She’s an awesome girl. The feedback for the song and video was crazy! USA Today premiered the song, and Entertainment Tonight premiered the video! How crazy is that? I really would love to do more duets, and I might have other plans in the works 🙂

You’ve stated numerous times that you are a self-taught singer/songwriter. What was the first song you wrote and what was it about?

The first song I wrote was actually about a breakup and it was called “Did he ever.” I think there was like 2 chords in the whole song haha.

This last year has been extremely exciting for you! Not only did you have the opportunity to open for Emblem 3, Ariana Grande, and Big Time Rush, but you also released your debut single, “Heartstrings”. Did you ever anticipate that 2013 would be so productive and successful for you?

You know it’s crazy because you envision seeing these things happen for so long. You expect to know how to feel, but when it happens, it’s an amazing feeling. I’ve been so lucky to have such a great support system and opportunities. I’ve also put a lot of hard work in the last couple of years. I can only imagine what this year will bring 🙂

As mentioned previously, you recently released your debut single. Can we expect a debut album anytime soon? If so, could you share any details with us?

Yes! I’ve been in the studio recently working on a debut EP! I don’t have an exact release date yet, but I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

Thank you for your time! Anything else you’d like to add?

Thank you for YOUR time! I just want to express to my fans how thankful I am for everything. I love them so much and I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing if it wasn’t for them.
