Review:: Free To Fly | Megan Joy

If you are a fan of American Idol, you may remember Megan Joy from season 8. Joy made it to the Top 9 by singing famous songs such as Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On” and KT Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” After being voted off American Idol, Joy focused on releasing her own music. Her first self-titled debut album was released in April 2012 and she recently released her second album, Free to Fly, on January 14th. Free to Fly is a collection of lighthearted pop songs that are guaranteed to put you in a good mood!

In “Boy Next Door,” Joy sings about young love. This song is a perfect first track because it showcases Joy’s happy-go-lucky persona. Joy sings, “Even when you’re far away, babe you’re right here in my heart / We will never be apart, cause you’re my boy next door.” While listening to “Boy Next Door,” it is hard not to become reminiscent of old flames from grade school. Whether they were small crushes or long lasting relationships, everyone had a boy next door that they admired.

However, Joy’s song “Double Life” is a bit more serious. Joy sings about raising her son while trying to make a career in the music industry. She sings, “It’s a double life I’m leading / It’s a candle I’ve been burning at both ends / To get back home again to you.” Music and family are Joy’s two greatest passions. Trying to find a balance between the two is extremely challenging since it means being away from your loved ones at extended periods of time.

The rest of Free to Fly is cheerful, focusing on songs about love and finding happiness in your life. The happiness that Joy has found is infectious and can be clearly heard through her lyrics. After struggling with drinking, Joy found love in music, her son, and second husband who is also a musician. You are bound to enjoy Free to Fly if you listen to indie and/or pop music.
