When we see 10-year anniversaries in music, it’s usually the anniversary of an album. Well, this time we’re changing it up. iLLPHONiCS, a St. Louis based hip-hop fusion band, just hit their 10th anniversary as a collective and THAT deserves to be celebrated! In addition to the anniversary, the band signed with Kansas City-based indie label The Record Machine to release their latest album, Gone With The Trends just a few months ago. Get to know more about iLLPHONiCS below!
How did iLLPHONiCS form and come to be what it is today?
iLLPHONiCS formed out of the desire to try out something new with music. Over the last 10 years, we’ve gone through many stages and some with major growing pains, but our objective remains the same: to always push the envelope of what a band can be.
Who are some of your musical influences – both as a band and individually?
As a band we have some common influences ranging from heavyweights like Stevie Wonder and the Beatles, as well as a shared love of ‘60’s soul music and ’90’s grunge.
Larry: Pat Metheny, Jay-Z
Simon: Charles Mingus, Marcus Miller
Keith: Bob James, Isley Brothers
Kevin: Queens of the Stone Age, Miles Davis
Chaz: Rick Ross, Greg Howe
What do you enjoy most about playing shows?
The energy we feel from the crowd is the best part. It’s kinda like a drug.
What do you do when you’re not playing music?
Everyone in the band has their own separate interests and that’s what really makes us so unique: that we are all so very different as individuals.
Larry enjoys gardening, reading, and devising new patterns of thought.
Chaz likes shopping, looking fly, and spending time with his daughter.
Kevin loves to bike and practice yoga, whenever he’s not recording, working at Vintage Vinyl, or running sound at a local venue.
Simon is a fan of video games and sleep, but he plays in a few bands locally when he’s awake.
Keith loves to chill out and enjoy a good television show or movie.
